Central London Apartment Transformed Into a Stylish Space With a Fresh, Masculine Feel

Updated: Feb 1, 2019

Derek had just purchased his central London apartment and needed our help to fill it with beautiful furniture. The property had new finishes throughout, but was lacking in style. Derek wanted to transform the apartment into a fresh space with a masculine feel. We were hired to focus on his open plan kitchen/dining/living area and master bedroom.

BEFORE - Kitchen/Dining/Living Area

The existing kitchen/living/dining area had a sleek appearance, with all the mod-cons, but was essentially a blank canvas. Derek wanted to source contemporary pieces that were in keeping with his urban environment. To achieve this, we utilised raw materials and clean edges for a modern, sophisticated look.

DESIGN - Kitchen/Dining/Living Area

As with most London based flats, square footage was limited, so an intelligent layout was key to the design. Derek wanted the room to be a social space for entertaining, so we chose a round dining table and a chaise sofa. The chaise is detachable, allowing Derek to create an extra seat if needed. In keeping with the urban look, we sourced a media unit and side table with concrete surfaces. The media unit is from made.com and features two shelves and four drawers for ample storage. The coffee table is from West Elm and also boasts hidden storage in the centre (shown below). When you're designing a room with limited space, any storage you can provide for the client is a bonus, but good storage is essential to maintaining that minimal, clutter free look.

Derek also wanted to source a relatively large dining table, which would double as a desk for all of his paperwork. In his old apartment, Derek found himself working late nights at the office because there was no space at home for him to work. This small change has vastly improved his work balance, allowing him to spend much more time at his apartment. The thing about Interior Design is that it's not just about aesthetics, it's about the way it can make a person feel. Your home environment can have a considerable impact on your everyday mood. At Rowland Interiors, we believe that everyone should have access to good design. Our design services are very reasonably priced for the experience you receive. We hope that this will be a step forward in disproving the faux pas that interior design is reserved only for the elite.

Industrial Storage Coffee Table - West Elm

The walls of the open plan living area were painted in Little Greene's 'Inox', with a feature wall behind the sofa in 'Grey Teal' to add contrast. Little Greene is a fabulous designer paint that is worth every penny. It's quality formula, means that it covers approx. 14 square metres per litre (with just one coat). As standard, most paints cover 10 square metres, so even though the paint is more expensive, you get more coverage for your money. As a bonus, it's also a water based paint, carrying the industry's lowest eco-rating. This means you don't need to worry about solvent contributions to the atmosphere or any respiratory issues, or the smell; they are virtually odourless.

DESIGN - Master Bedroom

We chose to soften the overall look for the master bedroom, with an upholstered storage bed from made.com. For a warmer colour palette, the walls were painted in Little Greene's 'Ceviche', with a contrasting feature wall behind the bed in 'Serpetine'. To add further warmth, we sourced mango wood furniture, with both pieces adding even more storage. We kept everything else relatively simple, with glass lighting and soft, neutral linens, in order to create a sense of tranquility.

AFTER - Kitchen/Dining/Living Area (In Progress)

Although Derek has deviated slightly from the original design, the living area is coming along nicely. Bespoke, ceiling to floor, wave curtains have been installed and the walls are looking very smart with a fresh lick of Little Greene paint. Full length curtains, with a top fix track are a great way to add the illusion of height in a small space. The wave heading gives the curtains a smooth, contemporary, high end look. However, it is also usually the most expensive curtain heading, so it's worth bearing this in mind if you'd like to create a similar scheme!
