Georgian Living Room with a Contemporary Twist

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

Jennifer's home is an elegant, Georgian, grade II listed, former Naval school house, in an idyllic village setting. With the outside of the property being picture perfect, Jennifer wanted to make her mark on the interior of the property to make it feel like home.

BEFORE

Sitting Room - Before

The existing sitting room was bland and outdated. Jennifer wanted a scheme that was in keeping the Grade II listed property, but with a contemporary twist. She wanted to create a room with a sanctuary feel that left a lasting impression on guests. Jennifer's existing grey Chesterfield sofas were to be incorporated into the new scheme, so we decided to go for a soft purple colour palette with feature wallpaper.

DESIGN

Sitting Room Design

Using 'Potters Clay 2' by Dulux on the walls, we created a restful but contemporary feel to the room. Jennifer wanted to establish a feature wall surrounding the original fireplace that would wow her guests. We designed bespoke floor to ceiling shelving for either side of the fire, with the alcoves painted in 'Wistful Mauve' to pull the long, narrow room into a cosy space. We also chose to paper the chimney breast in 'Tulipani' by Designer's Guild, to highlight it as an architectural feature.

For accessories, we chose an ornate silver mirror and a muted, deep pile, lustrous rug from Designer's Guild. The art deco inspired chandelier is from Graham & Green and makes the perfect statement light for this space, with it's mix of vintage and contemporary style.

DESIGNER TIP: Painting the walls in darker colors will make them appear to advance and move towards you. As designers, we use colour to change the shape of a space, draw attention to focal points and highlight the positive aspects of a room. If you have a long, narrow space, you can paint both end walls (the shortest ones) a shade or two darker than the other walls, so that the end walls feel closer to you. As a result, the room appears to be more of a square shape.
